The University of Glasgow WW1 Commemoration Group are appealing for help in finding names of those missed from our Roll of the Fallen.
There are currently 761 names of members of the University of Glasgow community who gave their lives during the First World War carved on panels in the Memorial Chapel. In the years since the initial dedication of the Chapel in 1929, additional names have been uncovered and they have been added. For the first time we must add further tablets onto which names can be carved, as there is no more room for names to be added to the original panels.
There is a particular poignance to adding names this year as we mark the start of centenary commemorations. With Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, UK and Commonwealth leaders will gather in our city on 4 August to mark the anniversary of the start of the conflict, reminding us that our fallen hailed from all over the Commonwealth.
To allow enough time to prepare for the preparation and dedication of the new tablets at the annual Remembrance Service in November, the deadline for submitting new names for this year is 31 July. Any names submitted after this date will be added at the November 2015 service.
